Roe v. Wade: A Modern Controversial Topic

Roe v. Wade: A Modern Controversial Topic

Roe v. Wade was a major Supreme Court case in 1973 in which “Jane Roe,” the assumed name of Norma McCorvey, sued her local district attorney in Dallas, Texas, Henry Wade, for refusing to permit her to have an abortion whenever she wanted. “Roe”claimed that she had this right by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States.

The14th Amendment to the United States Constitution states that “no state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges…of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property without due process of law….” “Liberty” does not necessarily imply privacy, as the Supreme Court understood it (liberty). Liberty, as they understood it meant that anyone could do anything he wanted to, and that if a woman wanted to be rid of the “inconvenience”of an extramarital or otherwise unwanted child, and she were not allowed to,that would be depriving her of her “liberty.” The definition of liberty as I,as a Catholic, understand it is doing what we wish while following the natural law. The Constitution actually says nothing whatever about privacy, but when the 14th Amendment guaranteed the idea of liberty,Justice Harry Blackmun, pro-abortion justice on the Supreme Court, said that that was “broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy (Carroll, 419).”

The “right to privacy,” according to Janet Smith, originally meant simply the right “to have such things as one’s journal or conversations kept private (Adkins).” However, after that was established, the Supreme Court used the right to privacy as a “wild card that permits the courts to advance a very liberal…agenda (Adkins).” This means that, by the right to privacy, not only abortion, but also homosexuality and contraception are permissible. However, we are not at liberty, by the teachings of the Catholic Church, to commit these great evils.

A woman has just as much liberty to get an abortion as she has to murder someone, yet the government denies her that“right,” for the simple reason that murder is wrong and evil. The U.S.Government could just as well deny a woman the “right” by “liberty” to have an abortion as commit homicide, and if it could be proved to the Government that abortion truly is evil, then it might prohibit abortion completely and permanently.

It is known that the United States Constitution says that all men have the right to “Life and Liberty.” Therefore,if it can be proven that unborn babies are life, then they, by the same document whose 14th Amendment supposedly has the ability to sign away their lives, are protected and, if killed, born or unborn, are really civilly murdered.

The case of Roe v. Wade had some strikingly childish and ignorant arguments. For example: Texas, a state which was predominantly against Roe, said that life begins at the moment of conception and that therefore the unborn have as much right to legal protection as the born. The Supreme Court’s response was that that “ ʻdifficult questionʼneed not be resolved [and that man’s knowledge is not developed enough] to speculate the answer (Mayer).” This does not follow for two reasons. First, this is not a “difficult question.” The fact that life begins at the moment of conception had already been determined before 1973, and therefore, man’s knowledge was certainly “developed enough” to know this. Also, the principle by which men should really go is better safe than sorry. The example given in the above-cited article by Mr. Peter Kreeft is, if a hunter sees movements in the thicket, but is not sure if it is caused by another hunter or a deer, would it not be better not to shoot in case it is a hunter? By the same reasoning, if the
Supreme Court was right in saying that man does not know whether or not life begins at conception, would it not be advisable to preserve that unknown existence in the event that it is alive? However, that would be needless anyway because we today know for a science-proven fact that life absolutely does begin at the moment of conception (Mayer).

In addition to the above fact, the whole concept of “my body, my choice” can be easily disproved today by modern science. When unborn babies have been studied and examined, it has been shown that they have DNA, and, what is more, their own unique DNA. That makes them their own, separate, individual human beings with their own bodies. As well as this, pregnant women, as a general rule, do not have four arms, four legs, and two heads. So the pregnant woman cannot say“my body, my choice” because it is not her body!

Roe v. Wade is unconstitutional, according to the Catholic Church, because when the Supreme Court decided that it was perfectly permissible for “Roe” to have an abortion if she so wished, they were either 1) obeying the Constitution but denying that the unborn fetus was a human, or 2) admitting that the unborn baby was really a living human but denying it the rights granted it in the U.S. Constitution.

A little-known fact about the case was that McCorvey (“Roe”) did later become a devout Catholic, left her highly-paid job at an abortion clinic, and eventually became a great leader in the pro-life movement, which shows how even the most stained souls can be drawn back to faith by God’s grace (Mayer).

In conclusion, Roe v. Wade was unconstitutional because the United States Constitution gives all living men and women the right to Life and Liberty. One who denies a woman an abortion is not violating her right to liberty, because liberty is not just doing what we want to, but doing the will of God freely. Roe v. Wade violated the right to Life because we know, and even the secular world had known for over half a century, decades before Roe v. Wade, that all human beings, born or unborn, are Life, created in the Image of God.

Where is the OUTRAGE?

There is certainly quite a bit for the Pro- Life advocate to write about about lately. At the top of the list is New York’s absolutely horrendous new abortion legislation. These “laws,” allow the termination of a child’s life, EVEN AFTER A LIVE BIRTH!  And, this type of legislation is spreading to other states, as we speak.

The outrage over this kind of legislation is starting to gain attention. Charlie Daniels (Country Rock) and other high profile people see this action for what it is. And, they are speaking out.

The Catholic Church, and many mainline protestant churches, understand and teach that original sin needs to be removed from the soul if a person is to gain eternal life. Original sin is removed by the sacrament of Baptism. The sacrament of Baptism is denied the unborn by those who commit the act of abortion. The unborn are murdered in the womb before Baptism is possible and therefore, they are being denied admittance into heaven. The murder of the unborn is outrageous because of the eternal consequences to that soul.

The more people that understand this, and how abortion, a “civilly legal but morally reprehensible act” effects their own soul, the more the outrage will build.

Yes; this line of logic and of truth is not widely promoted and discussed. However, it is the plain and simple teaching of Christ in the Gospel. Baptism is necessary for Salvation.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Stops Aztec Satanic Rituals AND Planned Parenthood.

Our Lady of GuadalupeThe year is 1487.  The place is a little settlement in what is now Mexico, known as Tenochticlan, capital city of the Aztec empire.  It is here that the most brutal and vicious act ever known by man is performed: that of deliberately slaughtering helpless people.  The Aztecs believed that in order to satisfy the wants of their gods, they were required to make a sacrifice of human life.  Thus, in the year 1487, thousands of unwilling victims were dragged to the top of a pyramid, laid upon a flat ritual stone table, there to have their chests cut open, and their hearts ripped out.  Their bodies were then thrown down from the top of the pyramid.

It sounds horrific and gruesome, and is repulsive just to think about it.  Yet it sounds frighteningly familiar.

Now the year is 2011.  The place is a little building on a street in Worcester, or Fitchburg, or any other city in the United States.  Once again, it is here that the same brutal deed is occurring: taking the lives of thousands of unprotected people.  In our own day, many Americans believe that in order to satisfy the wants of their own passions and desires, they must reject human life.  Just like the Aztec human sacrifices, abortion slaughters thousands of people every day.  Upon a flat operating table the victim is placed, there to be taken from its mother’s womb and its body to be thrown away.  However, in this instance, the situation is much worse.  The horrific crime of abortion requires the consent of not just a complete stranger to the defenseless victim, but that of the victim’s own mother.  The victim, a tiny baby not yet born, is voiceless in the decision of its own life, relying on its mother to save it and keep it from all harm.  Unfortunately, it is, not always, but often the mother herself who abandons her child to the knife of the abortionist.

Each Life Matters

If one were to think back to his earliest elementary school years, he would no doubt recognize the familiar and basic catechism question, “Why did God make you?”  The well-known answer would be, “God made me to show His goodness and to make me happy with Him in heaven.”  God has a plan for each individual He creates.  Each person has a job he must carry out.

Early School Days

Early School Days

Ultimately the person’s duty is to acquire heaven.  But, “What must you do to be happy with God in heaven?”  Again, a simple but important answer, “To be happy with God in heaven I must know, love, and serve Him in this world.”

In today’s society, where the influence of the devil is profound, many of the most innocent and defenseless are deprived of their opportunity to carry out their duties and reach heaven.  Among the causes of this deprivation are money and personal comfort.  It is hard indeed to even imagine that a mother and father would look upon their son or daughter as a mere inconvenience that will only take time and money away from them.

Whatever these individuals’ motives are, their actions have heavy consequences.  In the societal scope those actions cripple the economy.  Research shows that the loss of workers in America by abortion since 1970 has cost the economy 35 trillion dollars (Ertelt).  There are now less people to care for the retiring (Antkowiak).  All the lives taken as a result of the legalization of abortion would have produced around 1.7 billion dollars to Medicare and around 7.4 billion dollars to Social Security, which in turn would have given at least 785,000 retired workers the average monthly benefit for a year. (Antkowiak).  However, looking at it in the spiritual perspective should be enough to frighten or move people to discontinue this horrific abomination, this open defilement of the fifth commandment.  The fact that it does not shows the lack of spirituality in society.

Recently, only just last year, an infant from Canada by the name of Joseph Maraachli was born and died of a disease with no known cure, Leigh Syndrome (Ertelt).  Because of his disability the hospital in Canada refused to support him during his short life.  Thankfully, with the help of Father Pavone, the baby was transported to the United States where he was treated.

Fr Pavone and Baby Joseph

Fr. Pavone and Baby Joseph

Unfortunately, the disease he suffered from took his life not long after (Ertlet).  But the span of his life did not matter, as Father Pavone said shortly after the baby’s death: “We remain convinced that the value of life is not measured in months or years, but rather reflected in the love we share moment by moment” (Ertelt).  After the passing of the infant, Father Pavone also said: “This young boy and his parents fulfilled a special mission from God.  Admidst a Culture of Death, … they upheld a Culture of Life where hope leads us to welcome and care for the vulnerable” (Ertelt).  Yes, God has a plan for each and every person, from the unborn to the dying, and as Father Pavone said, Joseph was able to execute that plan, thanks to the chance he was given that was rightfully his from God anyway.  Just because we do not know what God wanted from the boy in his short life does not mean we can say his life was insignificant and then terminate it.

No man or woman has the right to deem when it is best to take the life of anyone.  One cannot possibly know what is between the person’s life and God.  Maybe, although the prospects are low, that individual is about to do something that will benefit many men, or maybe he will help someone’s soul, or simply lead a humble life and give glory to God.  Perhaps the old and infirm man the “doctors” are preparing to euthanize is remitting his sins and decreasing the time of his temporal punishment.  Only the Creator can judge the time to call a soul to Himself.

Terry Schiavo

Terry Schiavo

Terry Schiavo

The well-known story of Terri Schiavo is just another example of this point.  No one but her Creator had the right to decide if the woman should live or die.  Perhaps Terri was avoiding temporal punishment after death by her sufferings here on earth.  Maybe she was praying for a person who needed prayers desperately.  There is absolutely no way her husband could have perceived what was between her and God.  Again, here one can see the selfishness of people in that they regard not only children but also the disabled as an inconvenience or expense.  Contrary to regarding people as a nuisance, it is known that young children and disabled people can be the most congenial, innocent, and enlightening persons some will ever know.  From Christ Himself we know that we must have little children to learn from and imitate: “And Jesus calling unto him a little child, set him in the midst of them, and said: Amen I say to you, unless you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.” Matt. 18, 2-3.

Each life, young to aged, is of tremendous value.  Every newborn is one more person who has the potential to help his fellow men, give glory to God, and reach the Beatific Vision.  By the taking of the lives of countless individuals, people are forgoing the possibility of a better world with new innovations and more glory given to God.  By ending the lives of babies before they are able to be baptized, that many more souls are prohibited from attaining eternal happiness, and by prematurely terminating the lives of others, man is boldly declaring that he knows better than his Creator.

So… If Baptism Is Necessary, What About The Holy Innocents?

REFLECTIONS ON THE HOLY INNOCENTS

The Feast of the Holy Innocents, December 28, is doubtless the occasion for many priests to mention the crime of abortion in the course of their sermons. There are many similarities between Herod’s slaughter of the Holy Innocents, and the ongoing killing of babies in the wombs of their mothers. But there is one tremendous difference. The Holy Innocents were all circumcised little Jewish boys who went to the Limbo of the Just, and on Ascension Thursday, Our Lord brought them with Him to Heaven, where they now enjoy the Beatific Vision. The babies that are being killed in today’s slaughter of the holy innocents will never see the Face of God. They do not go to Heaven, but rather, a place of natural happiness, free from the torments due to willful sin.

Saint Gerard Majella

Saint Gerard MajellaAs a very small child he was taught that Jesus was really present in church in the tabernacle. Gerard then loved to go to church as often as possible to be with His Friend, the Captive Prisoner of the Altar. The Blessed Sacrament, along with devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom he lovingly called Mamma Maria, became the chief devotions of Gerard’s life.

These two great devotions had a marvelous origin in his early childhood visits to the ancient Marian shrine located at nearby Capotignano. There was a beautiful statue there of the Madonna and Child that became animated for little Gerard. At this point Gerard only knew Them as “the pretty lady with the baby.” The pretty lady would let her Baby climb down from her lap and play with Gerard. What’s more, He (or sometimes she) would give Gerard little white loaves of bread, exquisite in texture and taste. Benedetta was curious about the origin of these special loaves, but little four-year-old Gerard could only tell her that they were from the son of the beautiful lady. Anna, to satisfy her curiosity one day, spied on Gerard inside the church. Her astonished eyes beheld the miracle! She quickly ran home to tell her mother who, on another day, repeated her daughter’s act of spying. She witnessed the very same marvel!

It’s all about YOU …

It’s all about YOU …

There are many arguments against abortion. Let’s take a look at one that is “All About YOU” … and your own personal judgment before God.

If you are considering an abortion, or helping someone get an abortion, answer this; “What do you believe about life after death?”

Most people do believe in some sort of life after death. Even those who outwardly deny it, still have some interior reservation. Although some may say there is no life after death, very few really, really believe it. Deep down, in their “heart of hearts,” there is a “still small voice” warning them of the inevitable reality.

Most people actually do believe in life after death … and they believe in some sort reward and punishment, as well. The good receive some sort of reward, and those who were bad receive some sort of punishment. When people seriously think about “life after death,” this is about as far as it goes.

The Glorious Martyrdom of St. Agnes

St. Agnes, Virgin and Martyr, Pray for Us!

Saint Agnes

Here is the account of the glorious martyrdom of St. Agnes, taken from Butler’s Lives of the Saints, in honor of her feast day, January 21. In St. Agnes we see the true Christian abhorrence of impurity.

A great danger facing Catholics young and old is a lack of focus on the virtues that are absolutely necessary for salvation. We must strive for the “higher ground” in our thoughts and deeds, and nowhere more so than in purity. The young suffer from lack of catechesis, or worse, false catechesis. Adults may suffer from a lack of knowledge, or from desensitization due to immersion in the world.
